JURANÇON – Where to taste Jurançon wines?

_wine

From September through to December, the Jurançon region parties ! exhibitions, poetry readings in the “chais”, concerts, théâtre… all organised around the wine-harvesting. During the second weekend of December there are even shuttle-buses laid on so you can do your wine-tasting without having to drink and drive !

The wine-growers on the « Route des Vins » in Jurançon open their doors to the public and invite you to join in with the festivities in the different towns and villages, accompanied by a glass or two of the local wines of course and other locally-produced foodstuffs.

LACOMMANDE : pretty little characterful village on the Compostella pilgrims’ routes. « La Maison des vins » is just opposite the  « Commanderie », built in 1124. It’s the “hub” of the Jurançon wine-producing area where you can find lots of information about the different wines available, sweet or dry (more than 150 references) in the region and of course participate in a wine-tasting session !

There is also a great selection of other local products – foie gras, cheeses etc

Guided tour available : languages spoken : French and English

Open : April, May, June, September, October, November, December

Days/times : from Wednesday to Sunday 2pm – 6pm

Gers – holiday destination for the royal family!

Kate and George

On Tuesday 26 July the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, accompanied by their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, arrived in Pau airport by private jet. They were met by two English-registered Range Rovers and driven north to the Gers, to a destination near the department’s main town, Auch.

You too can holiday in the Gers like the royals – without needing a royal budget!  This lovely 4-bedroom maison de maitre is in a quiet, secluded location yet is only a 10-minute drive to the town of Nogaro, home to the Circuit Paul Armagnac race track.

MIDI-PYRÉNEES – ski in the beautiful Pyrenees mountains …

Ariege1

The Midi-Pyrénees  is spread over eight departments. It’s impossible to cover all of the different property markets in this small blog, but the golden rule being that; rural property is cheaper, while property in, or close to big towns such as Toulouse, comes at a premium.

Three of the départments touch the Spanish border. The mountain properties offer terrific value to who like winter sports. There are also daunting climbs for the men and women who like to squeeze into lycra and follow in the footsteps of Bradley Wiggins and co !

Away from the mountains you’ll find this is a region with more than its fair share of ‘Les plus beaux villages de France’ so you’ll never be short of somewhere to go on a rainy day.
